SUPERGIRL "YOU ARE MY HERO"

CHARITY MAGAZINE CONTRIBUTION

A Super Collaboration

In spring of 2018 I joined a group of artists to help create a fanzine to raise money for The Trevor Project, a non-profit organisation that does a lot of wonderful work helping LGBTQ+ youth of all ages as a toll free confidential suicide hotline, and the Transgender Law Center. The theme of the zine was a focus on the pairing of Supergirl, and Lena Luthor, played by Melissa Benoist and Katie McGrath in the CW's Supergirl.

The loose guidelines were to create art that was both happy, upbeat, and fun art. I contributed one original illustration of Lena Luthor and a keychain featuring the pair to the project. While I previously made portraits of Supergirl and Alex Danvers from the show, they did not feature in the magazine as this was an exclusive. I have also shared photography of the final products including the zine itself, the postcards, the sticker sheet, and the keychains. The efforts of the group and moderators raised $20,000 USD for the charities.

The reception of this magazine has been fantastic. It has even reached the eyes and ears of the actresses themselves, who remain supportive of the LGBTQ+ community behind Supergirl. It was an honour to take part in this project, and I am extremely happy to see it touch the hearts of fans, myself included. You can see more of both Volume 1 and 2 on the official twitter @supercorpzine.

If you have been struggling and need someone to talk to-or because of safety reasons haven’t been able to find the chance, please don’t hesitate to call the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 open 24/7. They also offer their services through texting (limited hours) or online chat.
